Twin Cities Indoor Adventure Rotation
Best Indoor Kids Activities on Cold Winter Days
Looking for indoor activities for kids in the Twin Cities south metro this winter? As a local mom of two under four and your Twin Cities real estate expert, I've compiled our family's tested winter activity guide for surviving those cold Minnesota days. From Apple Valley to Eagan to Lakeville, here are the best indoor places to keep your kids entertained when the temperature drops!
Indoor Activities in Apple Valley
Minnesota Zoo
The Minnesota Zoo becomes a winter wonderland of indoor activities for Twin Cities families! Those climate-controlled indoor exhibits are a lifesaver during cold weather months. Our family's zoo membership has been a game-changer - especially for those "we need to get out of the house NOW" Minnesota winter moments. Members can enter at 9am, which is perfect for early risers when most indoor play places don't open until 10. The Tropics Trail offers a warm escape from winter weather, and the Discovery Bay touch pool never fails to entertain little ones.
The zoo offers fantastic "Wild Wonders" preschool classes for little ones and structured programs for older kids. Membership perks include free parking, guest passes, and early access to special events like the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular in fall. It's truly one of our favorite year-round destinations in the south metro.
Millz House
This is truly a little known secret in the south metro. While they primarily sell and install large backyard swing sets, sport court floors and basketball hoops, and trampolines, they have pay-to-play hours in their showroom! For just $8 each, kids can spend a few hours jumping, climbing, swinging, and dribbling their hearts out. There is also a picnic area that can be used for snacks, or, if you book a birthday party, for opening gifts and eating cake. NOTE: pay to play hours are not available on weekends!
Indoor Activities in Lakeville
Emagine Theatre
When you need a cozy indoor escape, Emagine delivers perfect family entertainment. They run "$5 Ticket Tuesdays" with reduced pricing on tickets and concessions - perfect for budget-friendly winter activities. This theater also has a great bar with a limited food menu when you need something more substantial than popcorn. Sometimes you just need to sit in the dark for two hours while your kids are happily entertained (no judgment here!).
Bowlero
This Lakeville indoor activity center is ideal for high-energy kids during cold Minnesota days. Perfect for those times when the kids need to MOVE, Bowlero offers bowling, arcade games, and laser tag all under one roof. It's impossible to hear "I'm bored" here! They offer great family packages, especially during off-peak hours, making it an ideal destination for winter weekend entertainment.
Indoor Activities in Eagan
Good Times Park
This climate-controlled indoor playground in Eagan is a winter activity must-visit! If you haven't discovered this gem yet, you're in for a treat. The facility features a large playground, ninja warrior course, jumping pad, and indoor soccer field. They've created a great separate area for babies and small toddlers to keep them safe, with plenty of seating for parents to relax and supervise.
The electronic entry system with a code provided at online checkout makes coming and going seamless. They have vending machines for snacks and drinks, but you're welcome to bring your own in as well. Just remember to bring socks for everyone!
Blast Indoor Playground
Another fantastic indoor option that's worth the drive! Located in the Eagan Community Center, this 3,000-square-foot playground provides the perfect winter escape for active kids. The space features climbing equipment, slides, and plenty of room for energetic play. They offer both open play times and special themed events throughout the year, making it a reliable option for cold-weather entertainment in the south metro.
Indoor Activities in Bloomington
Richardson Nature Center
One of the best nature centers in the Twin Cities! While technically part of the Three Rivers Park District, this nature center deserves its own spotlight. The indoor exhibits featuring live animals are always a hit with children of all ages. Their amazing naturalist-led programs and indoor craft and play areas are perfect for little explorers. My son loves watching the birds at their indoor feeding station, and the touch-and-feel exhibits keep toddlers engaged for surprisingly long stretches.
Pro tip: Check their schedule for special weekend programs - they often have themed activities that are included with your visit. And if the weather cooperates even a little, you can bundle up and hit the short trails right outside to spot winter wildlife!
